Peterson Finds Footing Riding in Kentucky, Midwest
“You can see with the naked eye the building of this riding career piece by piece. The two stakes wins on Best of Ohio Day June 2 for trainer Mike Maker at Belterra Park. The first ride (and victory) for the powerful Brad Cox barn there July 21. Mounts on trainer Doug O'Neill's Midwestern string, and for owner, and Triple Crown winning rider, Steve Cauthen's local stable.”
Veterinarian-jockey breaks the mold on and off the racetrack
“Dr. Robert J Hunt, surgeon at Hagyard, said she’s certainly one of a kind, especially as someone who is trying to fulfill two full-time professions that are very demanding and require 100% focus.
‘Certainly she has the aptitude for it. She’s a very talented person, and I think she excels at both,” he said. “She has one of the best sets of people skills I’ve ever encountered, especially for someone as young as she is. She does everything she can to get along with everybody.’
He also pointed out that as if working two jobs weren’t enough, among jockeys, women are still not universally accepted. Further, being a jockey in the first place is hard work, physically and emotionally.
‘It’s toughened her up, but the way she has handled that is so amazing. She keeps a great attitude and keeps coming back.’”
Part-time vet, full-time jockey, Ferrin Peterson making the most of her time in the sport
“Peterson's college career as a pole vaulter helped her immensely as her jockey career began, as well.
Life as a jockey means pushing yourself beyond limits without a coach and that's what Peterson was already good at. She understood how to set her own training regime and stick to it from her time as a pole vaulter.
Even beyond that she knew the importance of time management growing up riding horses, doing pole vault, all of her extra curricular activities and more.”
Scrubs or silks? Ferrin Peterson is enjoying the best of both worlds in the bluegrass state
“Peterson was a champion pole vaulter in high school and college who always had higher ambitions. After getting an animal science degree she earned her DVM and CVA [Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist] at the prestigious UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, securing internships in Japan, Hong Kong and Dubai, as well as across the US.
At the same time she started riding as an apprentice in California, gaining notice because of her unusual background, if not initially for riding any slew of winners. But that all changed when she caught the attention of Julie Krone, the most successful female rider in the history of US racing.”
